MR8560-SL7550 Nylon Bungee Holster for Motorola SL7550 Radios
21 Nov, 2020
An excellent protective holster for the Motorola SL7550 / SL4000, with option to customise
The standard Motorola belt holster - an open plastic 'cage' - doesn't give a lot of protection to this style of radio. Case Guys product offers great protection, while still giving the user ease of access to all controls necessary to communicate with. Importantly, the holster maintains a 'low profile' and doesn't add a lot of bulk to the radio package overall. Very well constructed and durable, it should offer very good long term protection to the SL7550 radio contained within. The manufacturer also was very receptive to customisation of the case; I asked if it could be made in leather instead of nylon, and in lieu of the standard belt loop, could a belt clip could be integrated to the holder? "No problem" was the answer. Fantastic! The price may be somewhat higher than a mass produced product out of a sweat shop from Asia, but considering the bespoke construction for my request, and the superb quality combined with durable construction, all while still maintaining a low key appearance, that cost is quite reasonable.
Attenuator N 30W 30dBi male plug to female jack DC-3.0GHZ 50ohm RF Coaxial M/F

Not quite a true attenuator, but still useful
Normally an attenuator is bi-directional - you can use it connected up in either direction and it'll perform the same. Not this device - you need to take careful note of the input (male N) side and the output (female N) side. Get this wrong and you'll very likely damage the device. The first clue this isn't a true attenuator is that a return loss measurement on the input is very pleasing, showing around 35-40dB return loss. On the output side however, the return loss is considerably worse, almost unacceptable, at 7-10dB return loss. What that means, then, is this device is really a 30 watt dummy load with a 30dB sniffer port as the output. Connect the output (sniffer port) side of this device to a high power radio and you'll likely damage the device. However, that doesn't mean this device is of no use; far from it. When connected as indicated, it will provide 30dB of attenuation (+/- a little bit due to the return loss mismatch on the sniffer output port) and I measured it to be pretty flat across 1-1000 MHz. Note that the large radial fins of this device get in the way when using your fingers to tighten the N male nut up to whatever you're connecting it to. Those fins don't have their edges rounded off nicely, either. The N connector centre pins appear to be silver plated, which hints at reasonable quality. So, no, it's not lab quality. But it's good enough for field measurement purposes, and at this price, a lot lot cheaper than a lab quality instrument. Good value, and useful - so long as you know the device's limitations.
