The camera for those who like to have more control with their photos.
This is an awesome camera, I have been using it's predecessor (The Canon Powershot A630) for several years, after i broke the first one by dropping it on a concrete floor, i decided strait away i would replace it with the same model as i was that happy with the camera. Unfortunately now the replacement camera has a few scratches on the lens which is causing a blur on my photos so i wanted to get a new one and the only comparable cameras i could find on eBay was the A640 and the Canon G7, I have my reasons for deciding against the G7, but I'm not doing a review on that camera! The A640 is essentially the same camera as my beloved A630 but with 10 megapixels instead of 8, (oh and its black (and graphite) as opposed to the silver of the A630. Although I have yet to use the A640 as I only got it earlier this morning, I know what to expect from my experience with the A630.
I think its a bit cheeky of Canon to charge an extra £100 for an extra 2 megapixels, when anyone who is really into digital camera will know that megapixels are really just a gimmick, I doubt I will be able to notice any difference in the picture quality from the 8 megapixels to the 10, certainly not enough difference to justify the extra 100. (although that did not really affect me on the camera I purchased as it was second hand so priced accordingly) If i was buying new that would be my only gripe with the camera, other than that it really is a very good camera, the picture quality is fantastic, i would even go as far to say that some of my photos are just as good as i have seen compared to photos taken on my friends Canon DSLR. (again this is based on my previous experience with the A630) I use my camera a lot for macro photos, and the ability to focus at 1cm giving very crisp clear detail on tiny objects is a big selling point for me. I have done a quick test shot with my A640 in macro mode and the quality is as I expected it would be, outstanding! I do not think there are many cameras on the market today that can match the macro mode on this camera (bear in mind this is actually an old model now, the instruction manual is dated 2006) I also like the ability to have full manual control, which allows full control over settings like exposure (from 1/2500 to 15 seconds) ISO (80-800) F number (F 2.8-F8.0) and manual focus, also has aperture priority, shutter speed priority and a custom mode plus a host of different shooting scenes much the same as you would find on a DSLR yet you can carry this around in your coat pocket, i can actually squeeze it in to my jeans pocket but the area that houses the batteries which acts as a nice grip does make it a bit of a tight fit in the jeans pocket! (I quite like the grip) it takes 4AA batteries and I am aware that some people do not like these, I think they are great, so much easier to purchase and a good set of NiMh rechargeables go a very long way in this. Another feature I really like about the camera is the vari angle lcd screen (which is a nice size, 2.5in) that comes in very handy when shooting at awkward angles. And it's good that there is an optical viewfinder for when lighting conditions make it difficult to see the display. And then there is the option of being able to fit a telephoto lens and a wide angle lens, I dont really know much about other cameras but i dont think there are to many compact cameras that allow you to add additional lenses. It has a nice 4x optical zoom and the video quality is excellent.
