Bashin' (The unpredictable Jimmy Smith)

This was a chance purchase Vinyl LP many years ago, and it has remained a favourite jazz compilation ever since. I was so pleased to find it on a CD on ebay. As always, beautifully arranged. This is my idea of perfect jazz - light, skittish and sassy; the pieces don't get so way out that the underlying tune themes get lost in a melee of improvisation. Disciplined and structured, this album continues to delight me. This album blends a variety of tempo and tone, all very easy listening, great for any time of day or night. Jimmy Smith is one of the big names in great jazz, but you don't have to be a purist to really enjoy his music. This is the album I can play whoever my visitors are, and a great intro to Jimmy Smith's keyboard talent. His other albums have more depth for absolute jazz enthusiasts, and there is a foretaste of this in track 5, but his range is impressive, with a recognizable underlying style that underscores all his work.
