I purchased this book because I have read other books by Harold Simpson and enjoyed the way he provides a lot of detail without getting the reader so bogged it becomes boring. I have only read three chapters so far, but this book is more than I expected. Watching western movies was about the extent of my knowledge on the US Cavalry in the regular army, which we all know is mostly incorrect and seldom consisted of the beautiful heroine and riding off into the sunset. Cry Comanche provides a quick easy to understand history of the cavalry, it's purpose, and effectiveness in early American history up till the Civil War. The 2nd US Cavalry only existed about 5 years, but it accomplished two things. First was attempting to control the west Texas frontier and second to train officers who would almost to a man gain fame during the Civil War.
