Brother HL-3170CDW Laser Color Printer Digital Laser LED + Toners
22 Jul, 2016
Good Practical Printer but with limited lifespan
I found this printer to be very practical. It's fairly easy to setup, even with the limited user interface. It takes a little time to setup wifi. But this printer gave me very little fuss, unlike the HP printers I have owned. The toner is less expensive (per page) than any other laser printer and there is a hack to make the toner last longer (google it). Make sure to buy the Brother ink only, as I've seen the OEM toner be problematic (toner flakes off the paper). The only gripe I have has to do with the defective fuser that these printers are built with (the rollers). They start disintegrating after a few thousand sheets. Everyone encounters it. Brother warranties it's printers for a year IF you buy them at brick-and-mortar establishment. For those that use the printer a lot, you will encounter this problem in under a year. For others, you will find yourself outside the warranty window. It cost about $100 to $150 to buy a new fuser and Brother recommends that you have a professional do the installation (even more $$). In the end, unfortunately you're better off just buying a new printer. You can find people giving these busted fuser printers away on craigslist.
