If you have to run a zoo run it humanely.
I am not a big fan of zoos and so it was wonderful to read this still-radical book on how best to keep animals in captivity. Gerald Durrell did not like keeping animals away from their natural habitat but sometimes it was necessary to captive breed them in order to keep the species going as they would completely die in the wild due to lack of habitat and too many introduced predators. He studied them very carefully to see what treatment and accommodation suited them best and helped them to feed, thrive, reproduce and feel safe. This book is a call to zoos to treat animals humanely and not just as entertainment for human beings, and Durrell tells you just how to approach the subject.

What incredible beautiful pictures !
Amazing pictures and an excellent retelling of this famous old story. You can look at the pictures for hours and the text is simple enough for a child to read with a little bit of help over the unusual names. We have now got all 3 books in the series and delighted with them. Will look out for more art work by Ludmila Zeman!
