Hexys demystified
This book has many variations on quilts made with hexagons and parts of hexagons, like diamonds and triangles. The quilts are designed to be made with the author's special templates but the book includes directions for use of a more generic 60 degree ruler and full size templates printed to copy onto template plastic and make your own templates if you want. She also includes several styles of blank specialty graph paper one is encouraged to copy to design one's own layouts and color schemes.
Although many hexy patterns, including some of hers, require Y seams, she includes lots of hints to make it easier and patterns adapted to require fewer, or even no, point to point seams. There is stuff here I have never seen before on how to orient the fabric grain for the most stable blocks that alone would be worth getting the book.
I'm not sure I'm ready to start a new hex quilt yet, but when I am, this is the main reference I'll turn to as a guide on how to do it. I also have the start of a Grandmother's Flower Garden I cut out and started by hand 50 years ago with my longer departed grandmother. This will get me through that much better than my dim memories of what she taught me.
I am very glad to have both the examples and the directions the book provides and look forward to eventually making several quilts from its inspirations.

Color coordination help
This tool has 24 different pages of color families with suggestions for coordinating colors and samples of many different hues and tones to compare with fabrics one has or are contemplating buying. It also has two translucent pages to place over fabrics to allow more direct comparison of hues. They work very well for that purpose. Unfortunately, the pages are individual, held together by a plastic nut and bolt. That does make it easy to use, but the copy I received was missing 5 of the color family pages, so I sent it back. I will probably it buy again where I can check the copy completeness because I think it could be very useful.
