Not Wanted On Voyage - but still wanted!
2 of 2 found this helpful This was made in 1957 and perhaps is now a little too dated to have general appeal although it may be of historical interest. For example it has Katie Boyle before her “nil points” appearances. However wooden would not be a fair description of her acting that would be unfair to the wooden scenery. She manages to make to best of some ropey dialogue but only just. She looks uneasy throughout as if she’s expecting something really bad to happen & the film’s not that bad.
It's only sad, out-of-touch, aged viewers such as myself who will get all the dated cultural references. But like the curate's egg it's good in parts.
Basically Shiner plays himself as usual, a sort of East End spiv but with a heart of gold (allegedly) with Rix playing his usual gormless self, or rather the roles that he usually played as such.
The ocean liner is only a vehicle for a lot of silly situations in which Shiner’s role is always to rise above it all & come out on top, usually monetarily. Rix is only really a stooge and fills this role well; well, as well as can be expected for a man who has been to Hull and back, & back.
The rest of the cast are only really there to make up the numbers. Except for the chief steward played, I think by Michael Brennan, who sails though it all. I can’t be sure as he is not credited on the DVD inlay. However he does look very like the Sergeant Major in It’s A Grand Life, the vehicle for the aging Frank Randle (his last film?) & Diana Dors before her serious roles in films. Oh and Fabia Drake plays her usual role (“act as known” in music hall terms) as another battleaxe, she really was a one-trick pony.
Some of Shiner’s patter with the North African natives might nowadays get you into trouble with the race relations industry but then times change, even if people don’t.
Would I buy it again? Well yes I would even if it’s not a firm which would bear revisiting on a regular basis.
It’s part of The Best of British Collection released by Odeon Entertainment. My copy was a good clean viewable copy as are all the others in the series, so many thanks for whatever restoration was needed. I wonder if they could work their magic on me, well only a thought……

Garry Bushell - The Best Of Bushell On The Box (DVD)

Unfortunately that best is not very good. I can undestand why his show was pulled, the mystery is why it ran for two series.
I bought this because of hazy memories of the show which I thought was better than it was. Distance in time has not lead to enchantment. Perhaps I'd been drinking when I saw some of his series on the box but now alot of his humour seems dated & somewhat childish.
The only other attractions could have been the "glamour" models but this was very tame being vert tired & dated. Perhaps my tastes have changed...?
