    Callan: The film
Great film. It would have come out originally in 1974 I think, as a method of cashing in on the popularity of the long running tv series. However do not be under the misapprehension that it was like a lot of other tv series/film spin offs of the same period (George & Mildred, Bless This House etc....I do not need to go on!)Callan was original for portraying the hard end of the Security Services with no soft touches. The author James Mitchell created an early anti-hero whose services were useful to HMG in the short and medium term. It is no coincidence that Mitchell also introduced Jack Ford as the central character in When the Boat Comes In (BBC 1975). Ford (for me James Bolam's best part) was different only in that he could make the best of every situation. With David Callan you feel that he is trapped in his trade. In this film every actor plays their part to the limit, notably Russell Hunter, Eric Porter, Peter Egan and David Prowse. Note I do not include Kenneth Griffith who simply plays himself...again. Enjoy the film and try to remind yourself that this largely took place in early 1970's London. A world away from the metropolis of today. What sums up the hard edge of the film best to me was when Lonely enquired as to the wherabouts of Arthur, the large bodyguard of the oily arms dealer. Callan replies in a quiet monotone that "he had hit him and Arthur had died of it". The sheer terror on Lonely's face said it all.

    Bird of Prey
This was an excellent series which I saw when it was first broadcast. When Bird of Prey 2 was coming out in 1984,I recall the BBC making a wise move by showing the original series again immediately prior to the new second one. It was very ahead of its time with the central theme of endemic political corruption across mainland Europe and the malevolent creep towards Britain. The writing was slick and to the point, making you have to watch the next episode with no real idea as to how it would all end. Richard Griffiths plays Henry Jay, a middle ranking Civil Servant who stumbles across the conspiracy and just manages to keep ahead of the dark forces against him. Griffiths and the other first rate British actors all play their parts extremely well. Of course the scenery, effects and especially the technology appear dated by todays standards. I suggest looking beyond this at the central plot. In conclusion I recommend it without reservation. It must have done something to trigger my memory after more than twenty years as to the best of my knowledge it was not shown again for some unexplained reason. Perhaps The Power dropped a hint to the BBC!
