Fewer false alarms
It's optical, not ionising, so less sensitive to the faintest whisp of burnt toast. However, it has clever technology that increases sensitivity as the temperature starts to rise, as in a real fire. I've very happy with them - I now have 4 round the hose in total. 2 were provided free by the local fire brigade when a nearby house had a roof fire.
