If I had to pick one lens to bring, this would be it!
Strengths: 18-200mm focal length, VR II, compact size and weight (for the range it provides), easy manual override of auto-focus, fast and silent auto-focus Weaknesses: Very difficult to find anywhere near list price, will not work with film cameras Comments: This is a fantastic lens from Nikon. And based on the scarcity of this lens, it appears that a whole lot of people in the Nikon world agree. The title says it all for me - if I had to choose just one lens to go for everyday shooting, this is the lens I'd take. The 18-200mm range allows versatility and the VR II image stabilization system really helps. At $700 list, it's not a cheap lens but I consider it a great deal considering what it delivers. The only downsides in my book are the scarcity of this lens. I had to wait weeks to get my copy but the wait was definitely worth it. Also, this is a DX lens so if you use a film camera body, this lens will produce pictures with severe vignetting. Overall, a very nice lens from Nikon that I would highly recommend.

Very nice entry level DSLR from Nikon
Strengths: Affordable, currently the least expensive of Nikon's DSLRs. Nice feature set. Low noise in images. Weaknesses: No depth of field preview button, no backlight for top LCD, no LCD protective cover, Nikon Capture is extra. Comments: The D50 is a solid, entry-level DSLR from Nikon. I say entry level even though this DSLR should be 90% (maybe even 100%!) of what most photographers need. This DSLR allows point and shoot photography in full Auto mode for the DSLR beginner, provides various camera pre-set modes as a next step, and then also has Aperture priority, Shutter priority, and full Manual modes for photographers who want more control. I do have some complaints about this DSLR (see weakenesses listed above) but I understand that features had to be cut to make a certain price point. And for the price, it's pretty hard to beat the D50.

A D200 in a D50 body - all for under a grand!
Strengths: Incredible feature set for the price: 10.2MP, instant start-up, fast 0.8ms shutter response and more! Weaknesses: Grip might be too small for some, Nikon Capture is extra. Comments: The D80 is a very capable camera. It can go from a super P&S camera for photographers just testing out the SLR world all the way to some pro use. I would imagine D50 (and maybe some D70/D70s) owners would be tempted to upgrade. I can also see folks who were thinking of getting a D200 would instead buy a D80 and I wouldn't blame them. I was thinking of going from a D50 to a D200 but landed on a D80 instead, and quite happy with the decision. All in all, a very nice effort by Nikon.
