Grad Course on Ancient Religion
1 of 1 found this helpful This course is very informative. It basically covers the Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Greek, and Roman religious cultures.I learned a lot of new and interesting things about each of those cultures: new details about their gods & godesses, rituals and celebrations, myths, beliefs, texts, etc. Think of it as a grad course on those ancient religions. If you know a little already, you'll deepen and enrich your knowledge. If you are a beginner just looking for an entertaining overview, you might find this 48-lecture course too detailed and somewhat dry. The prof. is very knowledgeable and organized, and he speaks with a clear, articulate voice, but is not the most exciting speaker in the world. But he's not too bad either - a solid 4-star rating. All in all, I'd recommend it to folks who are very interested in the subject matter. I enjoy ancient history, and this course definitely added substantially to my knowledge of the ancient world. I especially enjoyed learning how each of these cultures overlapped, differed, and often cross-pollenated. Judeo-Christian traditions are also mentioned and discussed in these lectures, but are not really the primary focus of this course.
