Rage Against The Machine - Evil Empire (CD 2000)
After RATM's awesome debut it's easy to see how you could be disappointed with Evil Empire. The self-titled effort contained mind-blowing riff after riff, never dropping the standard, classics such as 'know your enemy' and 'killing in the name' creating it an unforgettable album. Evil Empire starts in an equally great manner with 'people of the sun' beggining with Morello's guitar hooking itself round one of my favourite bass lines of all. Zach de la rocha chanting "its coming back around again, this is for the people of the sun!" in the 1st great song of the album. With a slight dip in quality with 'vietnow' aside 'Bulls on Parade' and 'revolver' follow brilliantly packed with some of Morello's best riffs to date and some unforgetable choruses. but its after 'revolver' that the album starts to go downhill for most. 'snakecharmer' is ok, but a filler song at most. the songs to follow sound like a group of teenagers running out of things to do. some may call it 'experimental.' it is...no doubt... but its irritating and leaves you longing for morellos riffs to pummel you all over again. 'without a face' and 'year of tha boomeerang' leave the album on high, bringing ratm back to the great old ways bass lines grooving themselves around morello's truly special talent. on the whole a very good album, a recommended purchase. that assuming you've endulged in what came before.
