makita backing pad
1 of 1 found this helpful First off, this is NOT, repeat NOT a genuine makita backing pad. I am a professional user and have all makita tools and any time you buy spares, they come packaged as makita items, this did not.
Initial thoughts were, okay this looks the same, but IS IT the same?! answer, no. hole patterns all match up, and it can hold a sanding pad but the actual material is nothing like the genuine item. It is so much harder and stiffer.
This might not seem like an issue, but its the problem with this NON GENUINE item. The backing foam needs to be soft in order to conform to the shape of what you are sanding and as it is meant to be soft, it actually prolongs the life of the sanding pads as they are not burnt out on the edges so quickly. Also since the foam is so hard it cannot form to the shape, so when doing edges, the pad ended up CHIPPING and lumps came off it. NEVER had this issue with the original item that came on my makita sander.
As the foam used is so hard, it eats through the sand paper so quickly before it is actually done so I have found a big increase in the quantity of sanding pads I'm using compare to before.
Its only 6 or 7 pounds less than an ACTUAL MAKITA item, so I should have double checked. I dont mind paying for the real thing but this was labelled as genuine makita, so why would I think twice....Anyway, lesson learnt. Make sure its the real deal when you buy it. Steer clear of this item. looks okay when you get it, but doesnt perform anything like the genuine item due to being made of such hard foam. An occasional user might not mind, but for a trade/pro user, you will know the difference in cost and wastage.
