eXcellent little device once loaded
3 of 3 found this helpful The eXplorist 500 is an excellent little handheld GPS. The color screen is easy to see, the rechargable battery and SD card compatablity is enough to choose this unit over others. It wans't until I purchased (separately) the MapSend streets and roads detail maps DVD ROM that this thing really came alive! The detail map has all of the streets and roads including obscure little dirt roads we use for snowmobiling. I intend to purchase the topographic software as well.
The only reason I rated this good instead of excellent is due to the additonal $149.99 software required to make it usable especially in the car. NOTE: I purchased my DVDROM brand new from an ebay retailer for about $100.
Highly recommended! Another note I'd like to mention is in regard to the less expensive eX[plorist 500LE model. The LE (limited edition) does NOT include the rechargable battery and all reviews I've read say it eats regular batteries much faster than the Lithium Ion battery pack runs down. The redular model will more make up for the minor price difference in batteries alone.
