Remarkable dramatisation of the astonishing life of a major composer.
I bought this to replace a previous which we have lost during a move. This is one of the best videos I have ever bought. It deals with the whole weep of Wagners life as he trails round Europe avoiding his creditors and composing he goes with a wife and various lovers notably Mrs Wesendonk (crazy name, crazy woman!0 and finally Franz Liszt's daughter, Cosima, who, when he meets her is Mrs von Bulow. The stages of his progress are noted by shots of his piano being horse and carted round Europe (over the Alps at least twice).
The cast is exceptionally good. Burton is superb as Wagner and Ralph Richardson, John Gielgud and Lawrence Olivier as functionaries in the court of the mad King Ludwig II of Bavaria are outrageously funny.
The rest of the cast is of a very high quality e.g., Joan Plowright, Corin Redgrave, Vanessa Redgrave, Andrew Cruikshank, Ronald Pickup, Richard Pasco, Gemma Craven and Gabriel Byrne. What's more they are all on very good form. I shall watch this over the Christmas period instead of some of the rubbish being offered on TV.
