Rockin'
When Geffen asked Neil to do a "rock and roll" album, meaning something more "mainstrean" following his esoteric albums for the lable thus far, he took them literally at their word. Although the man himself had his tongue firmly in cheek when he described it as his "favourite album", actually it's a good slice of rock and roll and yet another side to the multi-faceted musical talents of Mr Young. Not commercially very successful at the time and difficult to get hold of in the UK, but well worth seeking out. It's no "Tonight's the Night" or "On the Beach", but worth adding to your Neil Young collection all the same.

The Kinks- Arthur.......
........(Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire) is another example of the peerless songwriting skills of Ray Davies. A total change in musical direction from its predecessor album "The Village Green Preservation Society" (absolutely essential listening- 3 cd set highly recommended)and an indication of the musical direction its successor album "Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround" would take. The album richly deserves a production of the projected TV play which was pulled by ITV, along the same same lines of the Beatles' "Anthology" and Stones' "Rock and Roll Circus" as long-anticipated realisations of intended bodies of work. This having been said, "Arthur" is emanently listenable-to in its own right. The CD release contains a goodly number of bonus tracks, including mono and sterophonic versions of Ray's mini-masterpiece "Plastic Man".
