Fantastic tube for V1
In my opinion, this is one of the very best tubes for V1 of a guitar amplifier. Remarkable clarity!

Sylvania 12AX7 SBP: Neutral clarity with fantastic breakup
1 of 1 found this helpful In general, I find Sylvania preamp tubes to be very neutral-sounding. Not overly bright, not too bassy, and so forth. My favorite-sounding Sylvania 12AX7 is the long black plate 12AX7, though those are unfortunately prone to microphonics. Sylvania made two models of short plate tubes in the 1950's--the short grey plate, and the short black plate. Both have early breakup, which is absolutely fantastic. The short black plate has greater clarity than the short grey plate. Both, however, are clearer than the RFT ECC83, which is another 12AX7 sub that is known for early breakup.
The Sylvania short black plate 12AX7 has rich bass and nice, chimey highs. It is scooped in the mids. If one is looking for clarity and very early breakup from a 12AX7 in a blackface Fender circuit, this is certainly one of the best tubes available. Since the short black plates are relatively rare, they can be pricey. But they won't be prone to microphonics nearly as much as their long black plate counterpart. In that respect, they are a good value. Magnificent tubes from a bygone era.
