    Brilliant
For a woman who has lived through the end of 1960's/1970's this book is a must read. It brought back so many memories not only of the shops, designs, fashion, social mores but of freedom to try new ideas and ways of business. It also encompasses so much social history and places world events in the back stories. I will keep this book all my life.

Book clean, good price. Story is an eye-opener on social services in the past. There are also sections about racism some of which was unintended and some very much deliberate. The author has led a difficult life but overcame obstacles. Although an uncomfortable read, our book club rated it 9/10.

Surprisingly upbeat tales considering subject matter of poverty. Very charming.
This book is a social history and undoubtedly true as it is similar to what I witnessed as a 1950's child. I do remember bread and dripping, outside toilets, babies bathed in sinks, tin baths hanging on outside wall and brought in once a week for multiple bathers. Picking up coal if you found any in the street or two bar electric fires and freezing cold in the house. Housewives shopped every day to grab bargains, keep an eye on spending and could only carry less items. Nearly everyone had a lodger to bring in much needed monies and lots did several jobs.
