so-so gun, don't spend more that $45

If you're just getting into the sport it's great, very simple to use and maintain, not picky about gas type(can easily use co2 or high pressure air). Great starter, but nothing more than that.
This is purely a beginner's marker and should not be confused with high end tournament markers.
The trigger is very spongy and has only 2 adjustment points, I found it very difficult to maintain a high rate of fire with this trigger.
The modes on the board are nice but useless, the only legal mode that it has is semi auto. Most fields have banned any form of full auto of burst firing modes, so they never get used and only serve as a gimmicky selling point.
The gun is a standard stacked tube blowback marker, this warrants a LOT of kick; you will be able to see the barrel rise very clearly when firing.
The stock feedneck is terrible, it requires a very fragile plastic tube that raises your hopper up a good 4 extra inches. A new clamping feedneck is a required immediate $30 upgrade if you wish to have any sort of low profile.
The stock barrel looks nice on the OUTSIDE but the inside is very poorly honed, leaving scratches and rings on the inner walls. Again, another out of the box $30 upgrade.
The integrated drop forward is useless in the age of high pressure air and only serves to make the gun awkward to hold properly.
The gun utilizes metric fittings and screws, so finding replacement parts is very difficult and sometimes very expensive.
The ASA holes are offset making your choices for upgrades very limited.
The gun does not include a regulator, only a gas through grip. This is because it requires 800psi to operate, creating a very loud sound signature.
I bought this gun only so I could use the body to build a custom marker, so most of these issues I addressed do not affect me. However if you plan on using this marker in it's stock configuration I would highly recommend other possibilities. GoG currently makes a marker called the envy that is easily 10x better than this.
In comparison to other markers in the same price range from 2005 it stacks up alright, but as a current beginner marker it absolutely flops; lacking many of the features that make a good gun.
Though it is now 7 years old, at the time of this marker's inception many of the features that it lacks were already in use on other markers of the price range.
I rate the marker three stars because for the amount of money one might pay for this, they could have a significantly better marker by investigating other options.
If you get one for free or very cheap, then by all means keep it. It is not a throw-away marker; it has a bullet proof design and very simple maintenance. Just don't spend more that $45 for one of these.

2011 Proto Rail
1 of 1 found this helpful Great gun for beginners and intermediate players alike. This gun is essentially an upgraded Ion, but with the Hyper 3 regulator, Ultralite frame and DYE barrel all included it's one of the best deals around. Efficiency is great, but rate of fire is limited to 15 bps with the stock board and bolt. Plastic feedneck is not so great, but easily replaced with a metal collar. Overall I don't think you can get a better gun than this right now for the money. I'd recommend this to anyone.
PS: This gun also makes a GREAT mech spool project!
