The Flaxton Boys: The Complete First Series DVD (2015) James Hayter ***NEW***
    18 Apr, 2019
A fine example of the golden age of children's television
This is an excellent thirteen-part children's programme set during 1854 in which a varied and well-knit cast of characters headed by Jonathan Flaxton, the youthful squire, and his friend, one-time apprentice chimney sweep, Archie Weekes, experience a series of adventures centred in and around the imposing Flaxton Hall in Yorkshire. The theme of treasure hidden somewhere in the Hall forms a sometimes vague but still distinct link between the individual episodes.

    A surrender to sentimentality...
I bought this book because I remembered it from when I was a child - it was the only 'Noddy' book I ever owned. I misguidedly gave my original copy away a number of years ago and later regretted doing so. I always remembered the exchange between the roguish Marvel Monkey and the clockwork clowns when, unbeknown to them, he stole their original keys in the night and they were forced to purchase replacements from him. 'Two shillings (10p)each, shiny and bright!' 'They ought to be a PENNY each!' was the clowns' outraged reaction but they had no choice but to buy or be unable to move! Make a profit - a lesson in capitalism for a child of three...
Doctor Who-The Evil of the Daleks (Target Doctor Who ... by Peel, John Paperback
    05 Jul, 2018
A highly-recommended read, especially as most of the original transmission has been wiped!
It's a novelisation of one of the best DOCTOR WHO stories - the first ever to be repeated on the BBC. One of the strengths of the book is the way the characters, especially the Waterfields, the Maxtibles, Kemal and Mollie Dawson stand out as individuals. The ending is especially poignant and far-reaching. The death of Edward Waterfield at the hands of the Daleks leaves his daughter Victoria an orphan and leads to her joining the Doctor and Jamie McCrimmon aboard the TARDIS. This was the springboard to arguably the best-ever DOCTOR WHO season, 1967-8. This season became known as the 'Year of the Monsters' - Cybermen, Yeti, Ice Warriors et al.
