Fortune Star Wrecks A Master Class In Action
7 of 7 found this helpful The Better Tomorrow series is tricky to review in the first place, being the schizophrenic result of Hong Kong studio mandates, contradicting artistic visions, and huge popularity in the burgeoning Asian market. So it's fitting this set would reflect that.
The blu-rays all feature rather good transfers of each film, certainly an improvement over any previous dvd release, which usually contained numerous film scratches, rough edits, and highly apparent artifacts visible throughout. The color correction on these cuts gives everything a bit of a green tint, but that hardly effects the viewing experience. If the visual is all that matters, this is likely the best these movies will ever look.
Unfortunately, Fortune Star has decided to attempt to "update" the sound of each movie as well. This isn't a simple audio remaster, but a total overhaul. Music, sound effects, and timing have all been drastically changed to the point where they almost sound like completely different movies. In a bad way. The spitting of smaller sub-machine guns is now a clunky AK-47 sound, like something out of Rambo and all of the handguns sound like muffled pea-shooters. Only the explosions, though perfectly suitable in their original form, have received a decent bass push to give them a nicer bit of kick.
Music cues are missing, and there are now several sequences of dead space in the film, where once there were bits of Joseph Koo's memorable score and the distant ring of gunfire. In fact, there are several instances of guns firing with no report at all. This drastically changes the overall experience, particularly in the final gun battle of A Better Tomorrow II. Once one of the finest shootouts in cinematic history, it is now flat with silence and stilted gunfire.
Like the Better Tomorrow trilogy's infamously troubled existence themselves, this really could have been something. But somebody else just had to try and tell John Woo how to be John Woo. Oh well.
