Simple but effective vice
When I received this vice I was sceptical as it seemed so simple. It really works and the good thing is that you don't need 3 hands to mount it. The flanges, where the maker's name and country are stamped, stick out and you can drop it into your engineer's vice without it falling through, leaving you two hands to load the wheel and axle into the vice. There is also a nice touch - to select the correct clamp to put your axle in, there are two holes in the bottom of the clamp spring that you can test on your axle to determine the correct diameter.
Overall a neat and functional piece of kit. I'm happy I purchased it.

Good paperweight, cr*p plane.
1 of 1 found this helpful The blade adjusting yoke is of such flimsy construction, the plane is useless. The sole is concave and the frog is so poorly cast, there is a chunk missing. The holes for fixing the frog to the sole are un-machined and the frog advancing screw is at an angle. I spent 3 hours flattening the sole and sharpening the blade before I discovered the blade could not be advanced. I contacted Silverline by e-mail, there seems to be no way to phone them' and they said I should return it for an engineering assessment at my expense. Given the cost of the plane, the postage would be throwing good money after bad so I wont be doing that. I am a chartered mechanical engineer and have been involved in design, construction and maintenance for 40 years, so I can recognise cr*p when I see it. I spent a long time cutting, forging, welding and filing a new yoke from a piece of mild steel bar - it works fine now but needs another two hours on the surface table to get it truly flat. The handle is made for a ladies hand, its too small, smaller than a Stanley No 4.
I will be tuning this plane until it works then selling it and buying a Record or Stanley.
Unless you are keen on sanding, filing and cursing, I'd save your money and buy a second hand No 7 then spend an hour tuning that.

Great tool for opening paint cans safely
Having attempted to open a paint can with a screwdriver and having had it slip and stick well into the palm of my had, I thought there must be a better way. I came upon this wee gadget and its brilliant.
There is a small bent portion at the end of a straight bar of steel which acts like a crowbar, giving great leverage. The hook goes under the lip of the can and the force is upwards, not inwards, as was the case with the screwdriver. I found it did not slip, was easy to use and I did not spill paint or stab myself. Overall Its proved to be fantastic. I now have two of them.
Its odd, having the plastic hand grip about one third of the length from business end, but that's deliberate as it can also used as a paint stirrer.
I would be happy to recommend this product as a much safer and efficient way to open metal paint cans.
I haven't found anything negative about this product.
