Nostalgia with a Facelift
The reprint of HeroQuest plays strongly on nostalgic elements. The new art is well-done and the box and components are of high quality.
The gameplay lends itself mostly to those who are interested in modifying it with house rules, or for a younger audience. Great gateway for tweens to learn more complex games, or for anyone else looking to dip their toes into modifying or designing their own games.
Largest drawback is the plastic inserts for the miniatures from the 2021 crowdfunded edition are far too tight, straining the plastic of the figures. Later retail releases do not seem to have this issue.
All all in, HeroQuest is the original dungeon-crawler board game. The “grandfather” of the genre. The reprint faithfully restores the original with minor improvements but no real changes. Expect late 80s/early 90s nostalgia along with 30+ year old game design theory.

Not Your Average “Middle Book”
The second book in the series does not suffer from the common “bridging problem” of many trilogies. Instead, the plot remains rich with new facets of the environment and the characters therein. There is also particularly important character development for the hero.
