What a pleasant approach to a Santa Claus movie. Most Christmas films will always present their take on the Father Christmas legend and this film does just that in a realistic and believable manner.
I was grabbed the attention of this movie because of another Finnish-made spectacle - Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale. And like the aforementioned, this film is dubbed over in English.
A good portion of the movie introduces us to Nicholas - a boy who in the first 5 minutes is guaranteed to win sympathy with the viewers (without going into any spoiler-like detail). All I can say is have a handkerchief ready to anyone who is easily tearful. Nicholas who isn’t really St Nick in this film but a really talented woodcarver faces tough challenges and lessons along the way on his journey to becoming Father Christmas. One particularly interesting character in the film is Mad Issac, a craftsman who takes Nicholas under his wing. Issac is a dislikeable local in the village Nicholas lives in, but he ends up being quite influential (There I go with spoilers again).
Christmas Story is like the Batman Begins of Father Christmas movies. There are several parts of this movie that could be parallel to themes and concepts taken from Batman and given a different lick of paint. Nicholas is portrayed almost like a Bruce Wayne equivalent in his village who moonlights as Santa Claus every December 24th. This is just one of the ideas used. If you’ve watched director Chris Nolan’s ‘no super-powers’ approach to the Caped Crusader, you’ll see the same attitude has been put into Christmas Story for a character who is otherwise illustrated with gizmos, gadgets and magic. Nothing like that is used in this film, although nods to Elves and flying are given.
I recommend this to anyone who likes Christmas movies and wanting something different from the usual Americanised offerings. If you don’t mind dubbing and want to see a good interpreted tale of how Santa began do give this DVD a whirl.
