Does not work out - but it can be modified to work
The tester as it is shipping in this version has been modified from the original design.
Someone has replaced the two transistors to another type.
It is not super critical which transistors you use. Any general purpose transistor will work if it has a reasonable bandwidth and gain.
BUT the person that replaced the transistors swapped the original s8050 by s8550 and that will never work!! The s8050 is an NPN transistor. The S8550 is a PNP.
To make the circuit work, do not use the provided two transistors. Use a general purpose NPN transistor. I used BC574C. With BC547 you need to rotate the transistor 180 degrees compared to the silkscreen on the PCB.
With the right transistors this is a great little tester that shows the frequency on any crystal I have given it from 3 to 20 MHz. 3rd order crystals of 50 MHz oscillate on the fundamental but you can still see that the crystal works.
Sad that they goofed the design with this mistake. I recommend the kit but with the modification replacing the PNPs with the correct NPNs

Very good value for money
If you compare this little unit with an Keysight, or R&S arbitrary generator then it would be a bad comparison. It is all about value for money.
And you get a lot of value for very little money. The unit looks nice. It is easy to use. It meets all its specs.
It is typically a hobby electronics user that buys it and the enclosure has plenty of space to put in additional circuits. It is fine as it is. But you can easily fit an isolation transformer or linear power supply inside to remove the small leakage current to mains. Or fit an earthed IEC connector in the back connected to the BNC ground. Or put an isolated USB module instead of the one supplied. All perfect projects for the hobby guy which can transform the unit into something that would have cost 5-10 times more.
I recommend this to any hobby electronics guy or radio ham. Perfect little piece of kit

Nice colours but awful smell
(Written on behalf of my wife)
Colours are wonderful
But the smell of cupcakes is so awful that it makes you sick when you put it on in the morning. Make up should not smell of anything and especially not like cake.
