    Dreamchild (DVD, 1985)
    18 Jun, 2025
AN INTRIGUING FICTIONAL ACCOUNT OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CHARLES DODGSON AND ALICE LIDDELL
Though Dennis Potter's screenplay for DREAMCHILD is more fanciful than realistic, the film is buttressed by superb acting from Coral Browne as the adult Alice Liddell, Amelia Shankley as preadolescent Alice, Nicola Cowper as a fictitious young traveling companion of Alice's, and Imogen Boorman playing a sympathetic Dodgson admirer and auditor. Roger Hall's production design captures the 1930s ambience quite well. George Cole's lighting leaves nothing to be desired, even to its foggy seascapes exuding mystery. Sound recording and volume control are notably flawed. Stanley Myers's music quite appropriately mingles saccharine 1930s crooner tunes with moderately menacing suspense passages. Overall, an excellent dvd transfer of the original film. Suitable for teen and adult viewers.
So Dear To My Heart (DVD, Disney Movie Exclusive 2008)

An early attempt by Uncle Walt to move into live action film production
SO DEAR TO MY HEART was an attempt by Walt Disney to transfer the type of characters and plots so successfully realized in his feature animations to live action musical settings. His choice of cast leads was only partially successful. Bobby Driscoll and Burl Ives certainly bring relaxed charm to their characters. Beulah Bondi is too stern in some scenes and unbelievably lenient in others. Very impressive in intense drama, here she seems either misdirected or overly histrionic. Luana Patten is unfortunately a well-intentioned youngster with only modest acting ability, Her tomboy character is largely a shadow trailing behind Driscoll, lacking driving force of its own. This fault lies partially in the screenplay, of course, and also in societal role restrictions on girls growing up in the 1940s. Because of the simplicity of its story and positive themes about responsibility and perseverance, SO DEAR TO MY HEART remains, despites these limitations, fine entertainment for pre-teen children. The dvd itself boasts minimal extras, but image quality throughout is quite acceptable, as is the sound recording effectiveness.
Witness for the Prosecution [New DVD]

WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION on dvd provides a textbook example of classic Hollywood production values
With fine acting by the husband-wife team of Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester, WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION makes for entertaining, if content shallow, film fare. Its script is both elegant and witty. Certainly Russell Harlan's cinematography, appropriate lighting variations, and the art department decor supervised by Alexandre Trauner are strongly supportive highlights. The film is an outstanding example of classic Hollywood technical achievement and makes a terrific introduction for young adults to the older American cinema of the mid-twentieth century. While not quite on a par with DOUBLE INDEMNITY or ACE IN THE HOLE, this courtroom drama provides a sterling example of how to open up and adapt a successful stage play for the screen. One drawback about the dvd version from Kino Lorber is the 6 1/2 minute bonus interview with the director. Wilder plays it cagey and offers little insight into either the film itself or its productions and boringly reiterates every point he makes ad nauseam. The dvd disc itself plays fine with no observable glitches.
