There has been a lot said about Robin recently, especially with the new TV series. Did the green tight hero grow up in the forrests of Nottingham or was he one of the kings crusaders who returned to find his beloved home ruled by villinous authority - who knows? In this series of Robin Hood, Michael Praed does the sword-wielding forrest martyr, justice. He is backed up in his quest by his band of occasionally merry men who include Ray Winstone as Will Scarlet. You may remember this as middle of the road Saturday evening fair but let me assure you there is more blood and guts and a hell of a lot more wierdness than you remember. The double disc even comes with extras. Good stuff.

Peter's Friends
Back when Kenneth Brannagh was young and Stephen Fry was thin there was Peter's Friends. Stephen Fry is the Peter in question and his friends are made up of Kenneth Brannagh, Emma Thompson, Tony Slattery and a couple of other British types. The film is classic British comedy with an even mixture of witty one liners and slapstick setups. Yes it has some drama and yes, like a lot of British films it has awkward moments and a couple of tear-jerking related scenes but all in all it is a good film.

Solaris
Forget George Clooney and his haphazard remake. This late 70"s sci-fi epic from the former Soviet Republic is the real deal when it comes to intense, thought provoking science fiction. This is the Russians saying they can do 2001 just as good as Kubrick and, in a way, they can. Yes, it is slow and yes, it is complex but isn't that what we love about Russian films, isn't that the reason we would buy something like Solaris. At two and a half hours you really do have to give yourself some breathing space in which to watch it but you won't be disapointed, once you realise that you actually have to listen to it and not just wait for any Hollywood big bangs then the time will just fly by. Treat yourself, buy it. If you like Clooney stick to Oceans 11.
