Better than being there? I reckon so!
Okay, I love Jimi Hendrix - watching this just made me love him more. Why? Well, I grew up with an LP containing several of these performances and visualised the intensity of the show - the extraordinary focus that must have lain behind his fantastic guitar playing and so on. I then see this and, God, he's just so cool and detached. The beautiful noise comes out but he's behind the amps chatting with a roadie, or talking to his bassist. He's obviously not really enjoying the show - which looks like it was chaotically orginised - plus he was VERY late on - but the music is, in places, WONDERFUL! Other bits are, simply, rubbish, but he knew that too and you can forgive anything for the genius bits! so I can't say excellent - though it's beyond excellent in places - and it's never average - so 'Good' it is!

Ella in a lovely sensitive and mellow mood.
Ella accompanied just by pianist Paul Smith on a collection of standards. This album was originally released on Verve in 1960 as 'Ella Fitzgerald Sings Songs from "Let No Man Write My Epitaph"'. This proves her as a wonderfully expressive singer who can really get to the haunting heart of a song. I think these recordings are up there with any of the big Songbook recording. Terrific.

Best laid plans...
Our 21 month old daughter sat glued to Mary Poppins on TV over Christmas. As any parent would we thought 'Hooray - a DVD we can all enjoy - let's get it now and she'll be weaned off Peppa Pig for ever'. This is, after all, the most wonderful and magical family film ever. Julie Andrews somehow JUST stays the right side of sacharin and Dick Van Dyke's accent is enough to bring a smile to the face of even the most exhausted parent. And it's a subversive tale in 'credit crunch' times in which the children, led on by Mary, show their banker Dad that money is not the source of all happiness and lead him towards true enlightenment (or something like that). And every few minutes there's a lovely tune to sing along to too. Well, the best laid plans don't always work. On loading the DVD our little angel watched two minutes before chanting 'Charlie and Lola' repeatedly until the DVD was changed and we were returned to toddler TV-land. Now, whenever we say 'Mary Poppins' she immediately responds 'I DON'T THINK SO' and we have to wait until she's asleep before we can enjoy it!
