Heavyweight champion of the exercise bikes
Schwinn has been making bikes since 1895, so they know much about the form. Whereas many exercise bikes are shaky, and feel nothing like a real bike, Schwinn's Airdyne models are solid, stable and just like the real deal. Even if you step on one of these for a second, you can tell the difference between this and all the rest. Instead of a magnet or fabric belt slowing the large flywheel down (the wheel that makes it hard to pedal), this uses a chain powered fan. The harder you push, the harder it pushes back, giving you exactly what a bike on the road would. The mechanical whoosh of these bikes is very satisfying, right up there with a BMW 6 cylinder engine.
This particular AD6 model has a basic cycle computer, which actually suits it perfectly. Those who are serious about fitness or health require the basics, but particularly the basics done well. This bike feels bolted to the ground even when it doesn't have bolts, and that feeling of security allows you to go for it during a session. In fact, if you're keen on doing interval training, I cannot think of a better bike to use regardless of price. The only other home equipment on this level is a Concept II rower, and perhaps a Versaclimber, and the latter is something few have the toughness to use.
These bikes are found easily in the US, but are hard to get into the UK, as only one company tends to import them. They are listed as commercial grade, because you could actually use one in a commercial gym. Most gyms won't have them though, because they don't have fancy display systems and iPhone inputs. Regardless, the actual motion of these is superior to all the main gym brands which use electrically adjusted magnets for resistance. These work well for light exercising, but if you push hard on them, there is a kind of 'turbo-lag' between your effort and the machine fighting back. The Schwinn Airdyne bikes never do that in the way a road bike would never do that.
If you put your feet up on the ankle rests, you can use the moving handles to create an upper body powered workout. That is, you can either push alternately using your pecs, triceps and shoulders, or pull alternately using you lats, traps and rear delts. If you pedal normally, your hands rest on top of the handlebars and just go along for the ride. The upper body workout variation is actually useful if your legs are particularly tired or injured.
All in all, the Schwinn Airdyne range is brilliant for those who care about the important factors of feel, stability and toughness. In particular, this modern day version, the AD6, is perfect for beginners to advanced trainees. There are slightly higher models, but they simply add gimmicky functions, and offer the exact same pedal motion for more money. This is the best version for money and reliability if you can find one.
