AVG ULTIMATE 2020, Un-limited Multi-Devices 2 Years (LATEST DOWNLOAD VERSION)
    28 Nov, 2019
Fine, if unspectacular, on par with rivals. Whinges if you look at it funny.
This was used for a renewal. Installation was straight-forward, thanks to instructions from the vendor, but the AVG website required repeated log-ins to my existing account to get going on the first device. Worked just fine and very quickly after that with my other equipment. Tune-Up has been disappointing, as a number of useful features on the latest Windows version have been removed, notably the duplicate file search. While not always accurate, it was helpful when shifting work-in-progress files between laptops and desktop PCs, where duplication was likely. Once I discovered the loss, I didn't update Tune-up on one machine in order to retain this feature. AVG overall remains more naggy than Harry Mudd's wife (one for the Trekkers, there). Like most software houses, they seem to harbour the belief that my equipment belongs to them, sucking up resources while crying "Update me! Update me now! Don't do that! Don't do that either! Put the AutoUpdate back on - I feed when I want to, whether you like it or not! You'll be sorry you did that... I'll make your life a misery... and by the way, buy this VPN from us as well..." etc. etc. AVG gives me more cause to tinker with diverse PC and software settings than any other application own. They tend to bury quite a few tweaks outside of the main menu, so you have to hunt for some, and I have to fiddle with services.msc more often than one should. These are my devices, AVG, and I'm not a six year old. Live with it. The trouble is, the others are not much different. I've used a variety of AV products over the decades, and (at time of writing) I've found AVG is the best package for the least money with its 2-year contract, providing you don't renew with them directly when your sub expires. The eye-watering prices quoted on their website are ludicrous to the point of laughable.

TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY - 2012 DVD - New Sealed FAST POST TOM HARDY JOHN HURT

    Very Nicely Different
Gary Oldman is a brave man. Alec Guinness was a consummate Smiley for the Beeb, all the way down to cleaning his specs with his tie-end, and looking like a Bassett hound that had been pushed around by a benign but careless owner. Above all, Guinness remains an all-around legend for the variety of parts he'd played during his career. He ran the gamut. I'd not want go up against Sir Alec even if I thought I possessed the talent to do so. Yet Oldman did, and it wasn't suicidal hubris. The result is a different, yet highly convincing George. Equally, John Hurt stands up as an equally convincing Control. As for the rest of the cast, however, the movie format does not do either the actors, or the characters they play, justice. For instance Ciarán Hinds as Roy Bland (though I found Hinds’ Caesar wanting in the US series Rome) seemed almost invisible after the introductory scenes. Even Colin Firth (as Bill Hayden) looks almost like an incidental spear-carrier. Forget Tinker, Tailor… this is all about Beggar Man George Smiley. And I’m okay with that. Oldman convinced me that there’s an alternate ‘real-life’ version of Smiley to Guinness (and yes, I’ve read the book too, and Smiley’s People, before I get whinged at by pedants). These Georges live in parallel universes, and so each is as valid as the other in their own time. Which would I watch again? Both, happily, but I confess that I’d be more likely to reach for the BBC version first.

Slavery in the Roman World by Sandra R. Joshel (Paperback, 2010) 9780521535014

    Instantly Useful
While the cover was not quite in the condition I'd hoped, the pages were immaculate. I found the research material I needed very quickly, plus more information than I'd expected. It is a more complicated aspect of Roman life (for those who could afford it) than I had anticipated, which was a good thing! Recommended, if available at an affordable price.
