An under-rated sports/sci fi game which can educate about football strategy
A lot of people, even among die hard gamers, like myself, are not fans of sports games. The sports games are the ones you tend to find on eBay for .10 or less or 10 for a penny. I admit I am not inspired by most sports games, but cyberball is an exception. The sci fi angle mixed with a very real component of Football Strategy, is extremely entertaining. You actually use strategy and learn the names of real-life, bonafide football plays. The game of football, for coaches, is a complicated strategy game that most fans are totally unaware of. This game helps you learn that complex chess-like nature of football. And because you are dealing with robots you can upgrade, etc, and who can blow up from overuse, etc, it can draw in the sci-fi loving, non-sport-game loving gamer(like me). I credit this game with making me like football, in fact. This is an under-rated game which I suggest trying.

Possibly the first open-ended console game-great sword and sorcery game
This is one of the games I found very addictive when I was a games-obsessed child, growing up in the Genesis' heyday. It is still playable, although the 3-D graphics are primitive compared to modern games, of course. But then, it was always intended to be a sort of 'cartoony' medieval fantasy game and so I don't think it suffers too much from its lack of visual sophistication. It was a precursor to the type of open-ended game that later evolved into games like the Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises. I do believe this was the first game for a console that wasn't scripted and basically allowed you to go out and do anything you wanted. That is what made it addictive. If you like open-ended, sword and sorcery type games or want to own the first truly open-ended console game, then I highly recommend this one!

Phantasy Star for Sega Master System
This is the first truly high quality RPG made for any console. The mixture of excellent characters, storyline, artwork and graphics/music which was far ahead of any other console, at the time. It is still playable, and doesn't suffer from the extreme poor graphics of many classic RPGs, which render them practically unplayable by modern gamers. This is the one which started the still-living Phantasy Star franchise and is still my favourite RPG. It is a given, it is also the best game made for the 8 bit Sega Master System--so if you get your hands on an old SMS and want to start a game collection, this is probably the very first game you should get.
