    Antonioni's The Passenger
I have seen this film at least ten times over the years and still it has the ability to astonish and amaze, visually and through the story. The whole is a unique blend of sensuality where every image every gesture and every word counts. For many years this movie was unavailable except in very poor quality dvds of obscure origin and videos. Now we can see it as it was intended. This is important, first because it is one of the cinema's greatest masterpieces and then because both colour and the unification of visual framing were central to the director's vision. He lavished so much attention on these that to have only seen versions where they are both grossly distorted (as in the previous releases) meant that we had hardly seen the film at all. There is so much in this film that even half a dozen viewings are insufficient to grasp its manifold levels of suggestion and meaning. There are some helpful extras not the least being the full length commentary by Jack Nicholson.

    Chabrol 8 film set
Here are 8 films including some of his real cinema classics. In some senses this is a bargain. The prints are good the sound fine but there is one big problem insofar as the orinal screen size has been trimmed down the sides slightly. You will first notice this in the title sequences because words do not quite fit onto the screen. If this distortion doesn't bother you then you will find this a great set but my advice to discrimating viewers would be to try and locate other versions of these films.

    Chabrol on top form
If you are tired with seeing the same old formulaic thrillers this may be the film for you. I'm a Chabrol fan but this is the master on top form. Fine story lots characters definition which make each a distinct individual, a meticulous script..... Although I am generally cautious when the leading character in a film is a classical musician because film makers really seldom get anything even approximating to reality - the complex relationship with daily practice of an instrument for example- this film is the one great exception, and I speak as a professional musician myself. Everything is spot on throughout, tone perfect. The acting of leads portraying complex emotions and it unusual situations is convincing and subtle and above all convincing. On top of all this, merely as a thriller it is mesmerising. So if you want a good night in curled up on the sofa sipping your hot chocolate in your pyjamas, this cannot be beaten. Film making at its sophisticated best
