A great all rounder
I bought the Li 1818 as an upgrade for an aging AMD 64 laptop. I won mine damaged, it needed a screen, so i saved a heck of a lot. I later won another, an insurance writeoff, that i took the screen out of. Once i changed the screen, i was deeply impressed. As quiet as a mouse, quick, with a lovely bright screen. I'm a developer, so am running Beta 2 of Windows 7, and a hacked version of Mac OS X 10.5.6, the x86 version. I've based this review around Windows, as that's what the majority of you will be using. Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T5300 1.73GHz processor (Total clock 2x1.73 = 3.2GHz) (watch out, there's a crappy Celeron version, avoid it!) is capable of a lot. DVD's, videos, rendering, Photoshop, it manages wonderfully without even a wink, spreading load out across its 2 1.73GHz cores. It manages all your usual Internet surfing and email without me needing to mention it! Although this machine is based upon the ageing 945 chipset, you can't go wrong, i wasn't disappointed. It can be upgraded to a maximum of 2.4GHz (total clock 4.8GHz) Graphics: The Intel GMA950 graphics let this machine down with me. I would have preferred Fujitsu to have gone with an ATI solution, as Intel's have been known to be poor. Windows 7 seemed to struggle with all the Aero effects, minimization was jerky, so i turned it all off. Watching DVD's and videos though is perfect, and some rendering, just don't try to push it too hard. I couldn't get Driv3r (Driver 3, a GTA like game) to run on it, it refused to run with this graphics chip. Other games i have not tried, but did not buy it for this, as i have a top of the line Core i7 rig for gaming. Sound: Sound quality is excellent, the Realtek HD high definition audio sounds wonderful in DVD's, music and video. It has SPDIF optical out, the headphone jack glows red with the Optical transmitter. This is a plus point for me, as i'm a DJ. It did not seem to come with the Realtek HD audio control panel, like i have on my other machine, which i use to adjust effects when DJ'ing, but getting an offical driver from Realtek instead of Fujitsu may solve this. Build Quality: The Li1818 is very well built. It is all screwed together rather well, and also strengthened with plastic clips on the casing. The whole thing feels good. The screen is easily replaced, and the housing all well thought out, but a bit more LCD housing strengthening like in the Dell Inspiron 5150 would have been nice. The keyboard is nice and sturdy, with good key feedback, and no annoying rattling. It is held in with spring latches, which hold it all in very well. The hinge supports have doubts, as i've seen and worked on 1818's where the supports have torn, they are like thin aluminium, and can break easily, causing extensive plastics damage if not sorted. Under normal care this should not be a problem, as long as there's no little tearaways present! Serviceability: This gets 10/10 with me. The CPU, RAM and wireless card are all under one access cover on the bottom, but the heatsink/fan is tricky to remove. There is a RAM slot under the keyboard, protected by a metal cover screwed in place. Removing the display requires the entire bottom plastics to be removed, which is time consuming. Quietness: The 1818 is very quiet. The fan is unobtrusive, but slightly audible, not annoying though, even on full! My Fujitsu SATA HDD is whisper quiet, i can only just hear it chattering when the fan is off!! If you can get a C2D 1818, go for it!

A buggy product because of bad firmware/poor support
The Thomson Lyra was the first hard drive based MP3 player I bought, back in 2005 and I was disappointed. Poor firmware and even poorer customer support from Thomson put me off buying another product ever again. I only bought the one I wrote this review on for the HDD PCB to revive the failed one in my original one!! The cute cigarette sized looks and big screen are deceptive, VERY deceptive, it looks like a nice product, but the reality is different... First, the good bits... Using the player is much easier than an iPod. Drag and drop Windows Explorer action makes it a breeze to copy files to, without the convoluted need to use 3rd party apps like iTunes. It supports MP3, MP3 Pro, WAV, and WMA/OGG. The Lyra has a built in radio, which you can also record to the hard drive, which was a big selling point for me. It used the headphone cable as the antenna, but the signal would waiver, meaning you needed to stand still to keep a good signal, especailly recording your favourite songs without FM hiss!! The display is big and clear, and although monochrome, displays all the info you need at a glance. Artist, album name, track time, and battery indicator. Rewinding and fast forwarding through tracks is informative, as the sound can be heard so you can hear where it's up to, unlike the iPod, which is silent during FF/REW. Sound quality is brilliant. With a good pair of Sony earbuds, the sound is nice and clear, plenty of bass. The volume goes right up without any distortion at the top end of the volume level. Battery life wasn't great either. Some people reported the battery swelling up and getting hot inside the player (it has a built in soldered battery) resulting in them having to use it off the mains once the battery failed, which is pointless it being a portable player if you're stuck to a mains socket! On to the bad bits..... The big no no is the firmware. The original firmware was buggy as hell. The player would crash with a HDD Access Error randomly, it used to run away on its own during rewind and fast forward, then crash. It had problems with some files too. Sometimes the radio would refuse to work or record, simply crashing the player completely. Later firmware updates made the player a lot better, but these are scarce, as Thomson got fed up of complaints and discontinued it, so the firmware is no longer available. The support was non existant. They'd deny problems with it, and tell you to do stuff you'd tried, and told them you'd tried, as though they were running off a script. In the end I just used it as a portable HDD, as this was the only thing it did perfectly, until the hard disk failed after just 12 months. I decided NEVER AGAIN TO BUY A THOMSON product!! A bunch of useless schoolkids. MP3 technolgy is supposed to be Thomson's technology, yet their own product couldn't handle it. What does that tell you? As soon as I've recovered my data, these are going in the bin, where they should have been a long time ago! My data has been stuck on the failed HDD for nearly three years while I search for a replacement Lyra, as the HDD's were rare on their own, too! Google "Thomson Lyra PDP2842U", and you'll see the people having issues, as well as me....
