Clonmacnoise Standing Cross Mullingar Pewter 7.5"height Traditional Celtic Gift
    07 Sep, 2019
Much more than a mere souvenir, it is a very attractive effigy of the hoary monastic culture that produced the originals. Excellent on all counts.
Clonmacnoise, a monastery cluster right in the middle of Ireland dating back to the 6th century, is one of the most intriguing places in the world, and has what I (with almost 50 years experience as a curator and executive director of museums, consider to be among the best anywhere. the place is famous for, among of things, three great standing crosses, all of which have been lovingly preserved, but only after centuries of exposure to the elements. The Mullingar Pewter is not exactly a true replica of the deteriorated crosses, but thanks to the meticulous research of the specialists at Clonmacnoise, it has actually been crafted to the pre-detrioration appearance of the crosses, so that the original iconography stands out in very clear relief — so it's more than a mere souvenir, but a very attractive effigy of the hoary monastic culture that produced the originals. Excellent on all counts.
The Romanovs: The Final Chapter by Massie, Robert K.
    21 Sep, 2021
Massie's Grand Tours of Russia Truly Sparkle
Robert K. Massie is the reigning dean of Russian imperial history, one of the very best historical writers on the 20th and 21st centuries. His books are brilliantly researched, wonderfully well organized, and astonishingly well written. "The Final Chapter" is comprehensive and exhaustive as a follow-up to his "Nicholas and Alexandra" and "The Romanovs", which really are truly definitive. In all of them the original historical research and brilliant writing style truly shine. Still, my favorites among his books are "Catherine the Great" and especially "Peter the Great" — which, like his books on the Romanovs (and even more so) pay close attention to the smaller and more personal aspects of his subjects' interests and priorities, such as Catherine's correspondence with and charity to leading lights of the French intelligentsia, her passionate collecting of at and literature, and her commissioning of Falconet's"Broze Horseman" statue of Peter the Great; Peter's devotion to shipbuilding and ivory-turning; and Nicholas and Alexandra's letter-writing and diary keeping (in English). I very highly recommend "The Romanov's: The Final Chapter", but suggest that one read it only after reading "The Romanovs" and "Nicholas and Alexandra."
Bach Les Concertos pour 3 et 4 Pianos - Beroff Collard Rigutto Tacchino -
    27 Sep, 2019
The advantage of the piano is its clarity and volume, far beyond the capacity of a harpsichord; and Michel Beroff is a Grand Master of the genre.
I'm generally a fan of the "historically informed" approach to baroque music, with historical instruments; but the advantage of also playing Bach harpsichord concerti on a grand piano is that the exceptional clarity of the instrument stands out against the orchestral counterpoint. Michel Beroff is a Grand Master of this approach, and this is an excellent collaborative recording. Bach would have been impressed and pleased, had he only lived to hear such a treatment of his sublime compositions.
