Balanced, love them, minor brainectomy
3 of 3 found this helpful I've had the chance to compare the M40x and M50X, both sound great, have soft comfortable pads, and a solid build. The clamping force can be a bit much, but a bit of spacer training will solve that.
M50x has a clean balanced sound signature, the bass isn't overdone and highs don't feel like knives. I love the way my songs sound and you can listen to podcasts on a bus without maxing out the volume, but even if you do, no one next to you will hear it. Very similar to Ultrasone HFI-580 btw.
M40x has a deep bass signature that can feel cloudy, almost muddy at times, your music will sound great without a comparison but you'll quickly notice the difference in clarity once you do. It's still heads and shoulders above your cellphone earbuds, but in a direct competition, it falls short.
M30x will be no contest, they lose on clarity, highs and bass. Comfortable but so much smaller your ears will touch the inside pad liner.
I'm glad I chose the M50x, knowing how they are, I would have kicked myself for having gone with the M40x. The clamps will try to give you a brainectomy, just spread them open a couple times for 3-5 seconds before use, and put a couple books in between when not using them.
