    Forbidden Planet (DVD, 2006, 2-Disc Set, 50th Anniversary Edition) - VG+
    15 Feb, 2017
    A True Science Fiction Classic
If you have never seen Forbidden Planet, then you should buy it immediately, and watch it asap. It is an extraordinary movie, a SF retelling of Shakespeare's The Tempest. Particularly amazing is it was made in the mid-fifties at the height of the bug-eyed monster movie craze. This is an intelligent story in the vein of Asimov, Heinlein and Ellison. The soundtrack is the first all electronic score for a movie ever created (no music, just wonderfully strange sounds and alien burbling). The acting is good, particularly Walter Pidgeon as the otherworldly Prospero and Anne Francis as his innocent but coquettish daughter. Leslie Nielsen's space crew is a little ramped up on testosterone, and much of their attitude toward Francis' character is pretty sexist, but it WAS the 50s. Watching the movie now, you can easily see where Gene Roddenberry was inspired in a few years to create Star Trek, and it is certainly where Irwin Allen copped all his designs for Lost in Space, from the saucer ship, to the robot ( who was built the same team who created FB's Robbie the Robot. If you buy one edition get the special 50 anniversary 2-disc set. It's packed with great extras including, in-depth documentaries on the movie, the creation of Robbie the Robot, the history of 50s SF movies, and several full-length features where Robbie later starred in. Everything you ever hoped to know about Forbidden Planet and more!
