The old Highland culture of Glenlivet, R.I.P.
As a native of Glenlivet, which used to be one of the last pockets of the old Highland culture east of the Cairngorms, I recently wrote a review of this book for a community magazine, as follows:
"This book is a 'must have' for anyone interested in the local history of Glenlivet, Strathavon, Tomintoul and the surrounding areas. The author accepts that Glenlivet is a true part of the Highlands, which are nowadays considered to be west of Inverness only. The book contains a surprising amount for details, from speculation about the ancient people of the glen up to the present day. He compares the parish of Inveravon with that of Laggan, near Newtonmore on Speyside; has excellent sections on Drumin Castle and the 18C Catholic seminary at Scalan in the Braes of Glenlivet, which was illegal during what is known as the Penal Days, when Catholicism was proscribed; and a whole chapter on the industries of Glenlivet, apart from whisky and farming, such as the linen industry, mining for manganese and lead.
This book carries a great sadness, but an essential one to know about, ie. the fact that much of Glenlivet's history is now held, as in the title, to be "lost", and anyone working in this area is doing a 'rescue dig' rather than oral history, partly as a result of the changes to the management of the Crown Estate which owns the area, during the last 30-40 years. Prior to this period the last Estate Factor, the late Sandy Taylor, told me that in his day, up his retiral in 1979, 'The Crown Commissioners accepted that they were going to make a loss on Glenlivet *in order to keep it the way it was*'. This book will help the reader to get a glimpse of that old Highland way of life that the former Commissioners rightly valued."

Excellent!
I like everything about this Sony micro stereo - 70W per channel, beautiful to operate, lovely sound for classical as well as popular music, very useful size - the speakers sit on either side of my desk without appearing to take up room, and the stereo right beside my computer so I can have music without moving. Really excellent buy.
