Shimano CN-HG700 - Ultegra 6800 / XT M8000 Chain - 11 Speed

Good Shimano standards

The XT M8000 11 speed chain seems to be a well priced item, and at the time of purchase more than a few outlets were dropping/slashing their price on this quality item which made it even more of an attractive buy, the chain does need fitting in a certain direction, ie: the outer plates with the text stamped on them need to face away from the bike, so...nothing too complicated, you may also need to take some links off, depending on your set up...and Shimano have in their wisdom included a connecting pin in the box, which is reasonably easy to fit...assuming that you have the correct tooling, that being a chain tool of reasonable quality; once the pin is securely home the excess material does need snipping off, and the pin is designed in such a way that a quick squeeze with the bladed section of a pair of pliers or similar does the job in splendid fashion, ricocheting around the dining room and taking out your best Ming vase. Sticking with the Shimano theme I opted to purchase a pack of Shimano connecting pins separately, for those repair jobs that may or may not pop up , and from what I gather, some other manufacturers do state that their quick connecting links of the 11 speed variety are compatible with the Shimano 11 speed chains...if that's the way you wish to go. The chain also apparently has a corrosion resistant coating, and this does seem evident after the washes I have given my bicycle and neglected to lube until my next ride. Overall I feel as though this chain is worth the money, and performs just the way it was designed to, nice and crisp, like a lot of things...keep on top of the maintenance, if you look after them, they will look after you. As for wear, I have put in some good mileage since fitting my chain and it does seem to be fairing very well indeed. Can certainly say that I like the product, thus I have one standing in as a spare.

Good value

Small amount of assembly required, namely the wheels need popping onto the axle, which then needs securing to the base of the box, which is a pretty straight forward and easy affair (instructions supplied). The plastic used in the construction of the larger base is of a good thickness and rigidity, will hold its shape well when loaded up. The pull out handle slides in and out of the base unit relatively easy and is comfortable to use, the next compartment up is the red one, this seems to be of a thinner plastic, and although it does its job well, care needs to be taken when snapping the lids into their locking position as the skirt of the red tray can slip inside the guiding lips of the base and lead to it being slightly mis-shapen, this is a very minor gripe and I feel that it wont compromise the structural integrity of the whole unit, just tickles the OCD bone, the tray above that is a little more rigid and sits well into the red tray, both are ample enough in space to hold an array of minor hand tools, there are some removable spacers for the red tray also, the locking lid is sturdy and has a centrally placed handle that seems man enough for the task for which it is designed, two clip down compartments on each end of the lid serve their purpose and will hold smaller items such as screws and nails or fuses. The lid can be snapped shut by the use of two clips at either end of the lid, there is provision to lock each of these clasps via the use of a padlock (not supplied), the lid has to be removed entirely to remove the trays, it is not hinged in any way, which I don't really see as a bad thing, the lid also incorporates a rule and angled area built into the lid which may come in handy for cutting items. Overall I feel that this item represents good value for money, and as I am using this item to store my cycling spares and tools, I predict that it will last me a good number of years.

Buff stuff

A generous amount of material that is super soft on the skin, no seams to agitate you either, some great colours available in the range too, though the red caught my eye in particular, the item washes well and lends itself to a multitude of tasks, I tend to favour using it most as a neck tube on those slightly chilly mornings, and on the hot days it comes in handy as a sweat wipe handily worn on the wrist, I've yet to use the item during the colder months, but I envisage using it as a skull cap beneath my cycling helmet. To summarize...this is in my opinion a quality item.
