Tales of Old Japan by A. B. Mitford (Lord Redesdale)

    Good stories
An old book written in the supposedly culturally ignorant and biased Victorian period, but actually pretty good and tediously accurate at times. Good stories. Just because somebody writes stuff now doesn't always mean better. Just check out Sir Richard Burton - his Arabian works, etc.

a Tale of Mt Athos, in the early 20th century
A very good very dated very self-absorbed book by a very young man who had received entirely too much education, and is staggeringly full of himself. However, once you get passed the first almost unreadable chapter, the rest is of great interest to anyone having a predilection and admiration for the Byzantines and their long and tortuous history, as it is immortalized in crumbling amber, as it were, at Mt. Athos. His later book on Oxiana, brings him to full maturity - but I still say he remained very full of self admiration.

Complete depiction of the General Kreipe capture incident
Gives a thorough and balanced complete account of this much written about incident. Consider that during WW@ many somewhat similar incidents may have and probably did occur, but about which the public knows little. This particular one was actually performed by several very erudite and linguistically brilliant Brits, who wrote about it afterwards and even people around them got some literary skin in the game. Great stuff. but their depictions had somewhat of a self enhanced sheen to them - so this book makes things a bit more balanced...
