Good, but could have been so much better
0 of 1 found this helpful I was excited by the specifications for this Blu-ray recorder and couldn't wait to get one - at the right price of course, which it wasn't for a very long time. However, after my initial 'oohing and ahhing' over the HD picture quality, and suprisingly over the remarkably good upscaling, my delight began to wane.
Firstly, there is the boot time from fully off. It's like waiting for a 6 year old computer to switch on. It does say 'Hello' a while after pressing the on switch which, after the briefest of nostalgic twinges from seeing this gimic on my first stereo way back in the early 90's (Goodmans, less than £70), failed to compensate for the long wait. You can, after trawling through the complicated menu structure, reduce this by enabling 'standby' mode. Bad for the environment, good for my patience.
The menus also take some time to load up, though they are not unbearably slow. What does annoy me is that, after paying a still inflated price for a piece of technology, I am FORCED to watch adverts at the side of and around the TV guide. No doubt these are contributing to the long load times. You can ignore them after a while but, to be honest, £400 should buy me the right to switch them off.
The internet capabiilty is a huge letdown. I may be being a little slow, but nowhere can I find a way to program what sites / facilities the recorder can access over the internet. There is no BBC iplayer, 4 on-demand or any catch-up TV preinstalled, and no option that I can find to set it up. Instead, I have the ability to use facebook and twitter. Really, why would I ever want to use these on my television? Without a keyboard, I'm fairly sure that editing my facebook page using an on-screen keyboard and my remote control would drive me even further into the depths of insanity.
Otherwise everything seems fine. I have not had the opportunity to check compatibility with other hardware as I have no other hardware to check. Reports I've read however, do not sound encouraging. I wait eagerly, and possibly in vain for a firmware update which will remove, improve or otherwise alter these many faults. Until then, my Virgin box stays.
