A Work of Art (and I Was Skeptical)
Let's be frank: Today's Perry is not 1987's Perry, or even 1998's Perry. The face, the music...everything has changed, and not always for the better. I grew up a Jane's fan...I even named my dog Perry way back in the day. I loved them, and with a little perspective in many ways i like P4P even more. I liked Songs Yet to be Sung alright, and Satellite Party had a couple of gems...Kind Heaven was a little disappointing after such a long wait for new material. Perry has changed a lot over the years, and that's a good thing. Adapt or perish...some lament the influence of Etty, I don't mind her so much...she makes him happy, as do his kids. I'm not the same carefree bastard I was back in '87...life goes on! I wasn't gonna get this, because I pretty much had all of the audio, and found a decent torrent of the remixes...but I'm glad I did.
It sounds great, looks absolutely beautiful, and really reminded me of the Glitz, the Glamour, and the Genius that was/is Perry Farrell.
I'm a real hater of cheap re-release/cash grab, three bonus-track special editions, especially when they come out right after I received the pre-order copy I shelled out for months in advance. But this, my friends, made me happy. Yeah, I already had the CDs, FLACs, and in some cases vinyl releases, but these really do sound/look great. Glitz, Glamour, Genius, Gorgeousness and Gorgeousity, O my bothers and sisters. Perry Farrell...I'm so glad I grew up with him and his music. Like a fine wine, he brought peace to my mind in the summertime. I miss the super-freak sometimes...we all do. But even Perry had to grow up eventually.
The extras are really cool (bandanna, art prints, and a nice little hardcover biographical book) are nice additions, and as I mentioned the vinyl looks/sounds great. A rarities/outtakes/live tracks set would have been a welcome addition, but it's a great retrospective.
How about a P4P box next?
