A powerful, strong, smooth engine
This engine is DCC fitted (DCC on board). When it arrived it was very well packaged and the first thing you will notice is the loco's weight. It is a heavy engine. The loco it self has some fine detail and the packaging includes various fittings that can make the engine even more realistic on the track. Which brings on to how it behaves on the layout.
First of all I tested the loco on a series of junctions and in and out of sidings. Even at slow speeds, the loco moved very smoothly over consecutive series of turnouts and diamond crossings. It is brilliant in the way the loco can inch-up to rolling stock at extremely slow speeds. I then set it going on the main body of my layout. This consists of a series of inclines using 1st, 2nd and 3rd radii curves up inclines. This demonstrated that the heavy loco contains a very powerful motor to take the loco up these inclines. I then tested the strength of the motor by seeing how large a rake of coaches it could pull up the inclines: It managed all of my 11 coaches with no problem what so ever at slow speed and (take note Hornby) no traction tyres.
The loco also comes with directional lighting in the cab and also at each end of the loco.
The only thing I would say it that if you're planning to buy this Bachmann engine and you have Hornby rolling stock the Bachmann tension couplings supplied are just a little too narrow for the Hornby couplings causing the coaches to derail on the curves. However, you can buy either wide couplings from Bachmann or from Hornby provided they have NEM fittings and that immediately solved the problem with rolling stock derailing on the curves. If you already use Bachmann rolling stock, you shouldn't have any problem.
In conclusion, if you're considering buying a new class 47 diesel for you layout, forget Hornby; go for the Bachmann loco. You won't regret it.
