The Small Faces - The Autumn Stone (CD 1986)

The Autumn Stone by the Small Faces comes across as a potpourri of an album. Thrown together and released by Andrew Loog Oldham after the group left the Immediate label before the label folded in the late nineteen sixties. Never the less there are enough good tracks out of the 22 to warrant its purchase. The excellent title track Autumn Stone showcase lead singer Steve Marriott`s voice in a slow to medium ballad one of his best songs. There are 5 live tracks included with steve`s soulful voice in evidence on If I were a Carpenter and Every little bit hurts being the outstanding two, if only the live sound could have been a little better it still rates 3 out 5 points though. don`t forget that live recording in the sixties included the female audience screaming.There are two instrumental run throughs in Collibosher and Wide eyed girl on the wall, as well two excellent well crafted atmosphere songs in Red Balloon and Call it something nice. Also included are nine top ten singles, the quirky Itchycoo Park & Lazy Sunday amongst them.The last track entitled Wham bam thank you mam is a fast almost punk/rock in its feel. All in All there is enough diversity on this album to please most souls and fully warrants the 4/5 rating. Happy listening!.
