A cheerful tale of three suitors
Deanna Durbin plays Mary, a switchboard operator at the White House, who finds herself being pursued by three men, a district attorney (her former fiancee), a naval officer, and an eccentric scientist who is trying to get access to the Pacific island where he studies fish, which has been taken over by the US Navy. various people, including the President, interest themselves in Mary's romantic complications. It won't be hard for anyone to guess which of the three she is going to end up with (when did the heroine of a romantic comedy ever fail to fall for the man she quarrels with?). This is not considered one of Miss Durbin's best films, but I have always liked it. It is a good humoured comedy, with a minimum of sentimentality, and some delightful supporting characters.

Durbin and Laughton made a great double act
Deanna Durbin plays Kim Walker, an aspiring actress, who bluffs her way into a part in a new play by pretending to be a protege of the star, John Sheridan (Charles Laughton), who she has actually only met long enough to ask for his autograph. Sheridan is very surprised when he returns home to find a party in her honour being held in his house. Some further machinations on her part cause him to allow her to keep the part in his play. Meanwhile, the author of the play (Franchot Tone) is not happy about having an unknown actress playing the star part. This is an amusing comedy with some wonderful funny scenes between Deanna Durbin and Charles Laughton, who are delightful together. One of Deanna Durbin's most entertaining films.
