    Goodbye Christopher Robin [2017] (DVD)
    11 Jul, 2018
Christopher Robin enters the real world.
It came as a shock to me that the original Christopher Robin did not seem to value his role in the Winnie-the-Pooh stories. I can, though, understand that he must have resented his parents' eagerness to exploit him in the way they did for commercial purposes. It does all rather tarnish the shine that an innocent reading of the A.A. Milne "Pooh" books creates in the reader's mind. The era they lived in cannot have helped, either: upper class, public school, army war experience...……………. it must have been hard to come to terms with it all for him. But it is certainly a film that anyone interested in Winnie-the-Pooh should see.
    Robert Simpson - : Symphony No. 9 (1988)
    04 Nov, 2018
Tonal masterpiece in an era of atonal irresponsibility.
Robert Simpson (1921-1997) was the best British symphonist of the post-WWII era. His 9th Symphony, whilst not "easy" listening, is his finest symphonic achievement, and the CD that is the subject of this review includes after the performance a talk by the composer on how he structured the work in terms of the tonal relationships within it. It has to be understood regarding Simpson that he stood up for tradition and tonality in an era in which it has become the acme of smartness to decry these aspects of music, and it is against this background that his work should be approached.
Paderewski: Symphony In B Minor (Polonia), 0034571153513
    10 Jul, 2019
Paderewski - brilliant pianist, probably a great Polish prime minister, but as a composer rather second-rate, prolix and somewhat boring.
I purchased this CD of Paderewski's Symphony in B minor (subtitled "Polonia") on the strength of having heard part of the music used as background in a radio 4 programme. The symphony comprises three movements: they are all long (the whole work lasts well over an hour), and while this is not a problem for me as I don't dislike works that are long (provided they are good and hold your interest), this music is not particularly interesting: it is very long-winded and not very original. The part I heard on the programme was from the middle (slow) movement, and is the best of the music. The outer movements are longer still, but not very interesting musically. So overall I was not too impressed by paying over £8 for music that I shall not listen to very often. The CD itself is of good quality, but for the reasons just given it is not good value, or recommended, unless you are an absolute fan of Paderewski's music, in which case you would probably know the piece anyway.
