A Must For Every Carmen Sandiego And/Or Rockapella Fan!
1 of 1 found this helpful This is such a fun album! The songs are a delight in and of themselves, and then there's little treats interspersed throughout, such as a running gag about the capital of South Dakota. When Rockapella "forgets" to mention it in their song Capital, Scott Leonard exclaims, "Oh no oh no! Pierre, Pierre, we forgot Pierre! AHHHH!" And then, several songs later, the actual mayor at that time calls them up to complain!
There are other clever in-jokes as well, such as references to the song that launched Rockapella to stardom, Zombie Jamboree, in the last verse of Everything to Me. And both Let's Get Away From It All (where Elliott Kerman sings lead) and Indiana (written by Sean Altman for native Hoosier Scott Leonard) are good clean fun. The more serious My Home is stellar, with moving and heartfelt vocals by both Rockapella (with Sean Altman on lead) and The Persuasions. And of course, what would a Carmen album be without the game show's iconic theme song? Here it is in all its glory, just like you heard it every day on the show!
Other than the Rockapella offerings, there are four songs by other groups and singers. A Beautiful Place (NYC) by Urban Blight is witty and fun, while Amazing World by Tito Puente and Nestor Sanchez takes a good life lesson and puts it to very catchy music. 3 Brave Woodsmen sing Feeling Fine, a song of traveling the world and taking in the wonder of nature, while The Violin tells a story interspersed with captivating and dance-worthy fiddle playing.
Even the game show's host, Greg Lee, gets into the act. Near the beginning he has a very funny bit as a subway announcer, complete with fake thick accent. And at the end, he comes on as his host persona from the show as the children chorus "Do it, Rockapella!" to begin the nostalgic theme song.
It's an amazing and fun album, which tries to capture different music styles and different parts of the world. I believe the only thing it's really missing is some involvement by the late Lynne Thigpen, the beloved Chief of ACME Crimenet. A scene with her and Greg would have been hilarious and made the album feel even more like the show on which it is based.
But it is highly recommended! The vintage Rockapella songs are a delight, and I believe most are not available on any other album. And the little bits of tongue-in-cheek humor will bring a smile to your face, if not outright chuckles or laughter. It belongs in the collection of every Rockapella fan, as well as fans of the original Carmen Sandiego game show.
