A Solid Title in the Series
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 is notorious for being the hardest game in the franchise. I've been playing this game for like 18 years now and it's still hard to me! I definitely wasn't getting those higher scores and combos without a few cheats. If this were your first Tony Hawk game it might discourage you, so I'd go for Tony Hawk's Underground instead.
The graphics aren't terrible, but they haven't aged well. People's faces are JPEG'd to oblivion and you can definitely see the edges and textures in this game. The draw distance is good at least, and runs at 720p on the original Xbox so it's not horrible on modern TVs.
The gameplay itself isn't bad either, but I've been spoiled by later entries to the series allowing you to walk, so general ability to "go from here to there" is pretty low and you do a lot of bouncing off of walls until you're facing the right way. Balance is one of the integral systems in this game and its really unforgiving, so keep grinds and manuashort! Even with the few shortcomings that the basic gameplay has, the levels are all tons of fun (except shipyard) so it's not a total headache to get around.
All in all, if you've played it before or you need it for your collection, it's there. If you've played every other game and want to see if you like this one? You probably won't, but that shouldn't stop you from trying it.
In a sentence, it doesn't look as good as you remember, handles just as bad as you remember, it's HARDER than you remember, but gosh dangit it's still Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4.
