Xpelair Quiet Simply Silent Bathroom Extractor Fan - Humidistat & Timer - Round
    07 Jun, 2016
    Neat, quiet, versatile and effective!
I originally bought three Xpelair C4 fans: pullcord, timer and humidistat/timer ones. This review is for the C4HTR version. The installation of the product is really simple; we have round metallic air ducts, so the fan can be just pushed in the duct and tightened with the quick fit clamps. The electrical wiring was not done by myself, but connecting the fan seems easy as long as you remember to connect the wires so that the fan can be operated with the light switch. I put the humidistat/timer to the bathroom, obviously. I use it on the low speed, on which it is really quiet (most sound comes from air flow rather than the fan itself). The airflow is sufficient for our small bathroom in my opinion, but the high speed could be used if needed. On high speed there is more noise present, but still not unbearable. The humidistat has a minimum humidity setting of 50% RH, which in our bathroom does not trigger the fan even after running the shower for a while (in the summer, could be different in the winter). But exhaling moist air to the humidistat did start the fan, so it does work. I use the humidistat at minimum and over-run timer at maximum (the over-run timer should be min. 30 mins to allow bathroom to dry) to minimize the risk of moisture building up in our bathroom. Overall our bathroom air is more fresh because the fan blows most of the moist air outside. On high speed the fan obviously pushes out more air, but it works much better without the cover. The noise is lower and because the air resistance is smaller, more air is pushed to the duct if the cover is not intact. Although the aesthetics do suffer from removing the cover and water could in theory be splashed to the fan electronics without the cover... I can't say about the longevity of the product, but so far (couple of weeks) it is working nicely and quietly on the ceiling. No real cons I can think of, not at least at this price point. The two different speeds is a huge plus!
Xpelair C4PR 4" Quiet Silent Ghost Bathroom Round Extractor Fan with Pullcord

    Quiet, efficient and handy!
I originally bought three Xpelair C4 fans: pullcord, timer and humidistat/timer ones. This review is for the C4PR version. The installation of the product is really simple; we have round metallic air ducts, so the fan can be just pushed in the duct and tightened with the quick fit clamps. The electrical wiring was not done by myself, but connecting the fan seems really easy. We didn't have any kind of air ventilation system in our house, only natural ventilation. This is why I bought one of these with a pull cord, and put it in one of the ventilation ducts. I use the fan on the low speed, on which it is really quiet (most sound comes from air flow rather than the fan itself). The airflow is sufficient, and the quiet operating noise is a huge plus. I did try to use it on high mode, but i had a resonance noise from the fan which was unbearable. The pullcord version is handy if you don't want the operation to be dependent on light switch. I can turn the fan off at winter if it causes too much draft. I don't use the cover on the fan. The fan would look more pleasing with the cover attached, but I have it installed at a place where one would not normally see it. The fan works much better without the cover, which is more true on the high speed setting. The noise is lower and because the air resistance is smaller, more air is pushed to the duct if the cover is not intact. Although the aesthetics do suffer from removing the cover, and I would not take the cover off if the fan would be in plain sight. I can't say about the longevity of the product, but so far (couple of weeks) it is working nicely and quietly on the ceiling. No real cons I can think of, not at least at this price point. The two different speeds is a huge plus!

Better than your regular bathroom fan
I originally bought three Xpelair C4 fans: pullcord, timer and humidistat/timer ones. This review is for the C4TR version. The installation of the product is really simple; we have round metallic air ducts, so the fan can be just pushed in the duct and tightened with the quick fit clamps. The electrical wiring was not done by myself, but connecting the fan seems easy as long as you remember to connect the wires so that the fan is operated with the light switch. I put the timer fan to the restroom. I use it on the high speed, on which the fan sound is slightly higher than on low, but also the air flow is better. It does a good job blowing all the unwanted smells to the roof, and with an over-run timer (set to) of 5 minutes the restroom air stays odorless. In some cases the low speed might not be enough to push the air outside, depending on the duct layout and air resistance. I had this happen to me; I looked through the fan to the duct, and saw that the backdraft shutter flaps would not open when the fan was on. This was due to the pressure in the duct, but was fixed by setting the fan speed to high. This is a small nuisance because the fan makes more noise on the high speed, but also moves more air so the tradeoff is worth it. I'd say this isn't a problem in normal cases, but I have the fan installed in a duct which joins to another duct with another fan installed to it also. This other fan causes the excess pressure to the duct and blocks the airflow on low speed. On high speed the fan obviously pushes out more air, but it works even better without the cover. The noise is lower and because the air resistance is smaller, more air is pushed to the duct if the cover is not intact. Although the aesthetics do suffer from removing the cover... Because I use the fan on high speed, I have the fan without the cover to slightly lower the noise level (and probably to enhance air flow). I can't say about the longevity of the product, but so far (couple of weeks) it is working nicely and quietly on the ceiling. No real cons I can think of, not at least at this price point. The two different speeds is a huge plus!
