Rape, Consistent Domestic Violence
It absolutely amazes me that these books were marketed for youth readers. You should be warned that there are domestic violence & rape triggers throughout this series. You should be warned that Jordan's entire world view is essentially that men should & do dominate women, often violently, routinely hitting them to make them submit or as punishment. This series disgusts me. Jordan also was a terrible writer--the man used 15 pages to say simply that two women took a bath. He needed an editor badly. His plots move glacier slow.

Advocates Domestic Violence & Abuse
This book is so disturbing with the way the male characters beat, belittled, verbally & physically abuse women that I truly don't even think this series would have been marketed to YA readers if Robert Jordan had not literally married a publisher (his wife=Tor). Brandon Sanderson's writing is a million times clearer than Jordan's--and he doesn't waste 20-30 pages trying to say something simple like "they ate dinner." But the plot & all of violence against women is still Jordan's, and it's disgusting. Rand states in the very first chapter that he plans to use up the four women who love him, and that is that. I mean it's just a very unhealthy depiction of love & friendship. There is also an amazing amount of racism-the border tribes are literally dehumanized as much as possible--Rand thinks of them as fully disposable.
Robert Jordan was a southerner in the worst most stereotypical sense--an obviously sick & entitled man who never got over the fact that his wife was initially wealthier & more powerful than he was.

Best Fantasy
Laini Taylor is so well known for Strange the Dreamer, but this trilogy is by far my favorite. Absolutely incredible fantasy! If you can still find a first edition of these books in this trilogy, this is what I consider a staple for any fan of fantasy literature. Nice copies of these first editions are truly hard to find though as most are reprints or library editors.
